John Fogerty @ Seine Musicale, Boulogne-Billancourt - May 31st, 2023

John Fogerty turned 78 a few days ago, but you wouldn't know it from the performance he just gave at the Seine Musicale in the outskirts of Paris. Is it the fact that he re-acquired the rights to his Creedence Clearwater Revival songs catalogue? Is it that he is accompanied by his sons' band Hearty Har? Whatever it is, he doesn't bear the marks of a lifetime in rock n' roll. His vocals are intact, and his energy is contagious: in theory, this was an all-seated show, but a large part of the audience never stopped dancing from the very first song until the metaphorical curtain dropped. But then it's hard to stay seated when the band is playing this repertoire.

Pre-save Foo Fighters' new record But Here We Are here

Taylor Hawkins died a little over a year ago, and when the tragedy happened some commenters speculated that Foo Fighters would, at the very least, be taking a very long sabbatical. Then band leader Dave Grohl's mother passed away the following August, and many seemed to think that this would signify the end of the beloved band.

Joe Satriani @ Olympia, Paris - May 21st, 2023

This was another one of those concerts that was postponed several times and it was well worth the wait. Satch played two fantastic sets, totaling nearly two and a half hours of music. That's because, since the world came to a halt over three years ago, Joe Satriani released two new records: Shapeshifting in 2020 and The Elephants Of Mars in 2022. So there's a lot we need to catch up on.

Metallica @ Stade de France, Saint-Denis - May 19th, 2023

Two nights in one stadium. Two sets of openers. Two completely different set lists. Eight giant tower screens. 32 songs. 120 000 tickets sold. When it comes to putting on a show, Metallica don't fuck around. 39 years after their first Paris gig at the now-defunct Espace Balard and two nights after an epic concert at the Stade de France, here they are again for more Metal, more fire, more fury and most of all more fun.

Metallica @ Stade de France, Saint-Denis - May 17th, 2023

Two nights in a stadium. Two different set lists with zero repeat. Two sets of openers. This is the concept of Metallica's No Repeat Week End, which they are taking across the world in select cities. Say what you want about the American Heavy Metal juggernaut, they certainly do things their way. What other Hard Rock band could pull this off?

Epica @ Stade de France, Saint-Denis - May 17th, 2023

Dutch Symphonic Metal band Epica replaced Five Finger Death Punch who was originally slotted to open the show but had to pull out due to their frontman's, erm, back problems. Their new album The Alchemy Project was released back in November.

Ice Nine Kills @ Stade de France, Saint-Denis - May 17th, 2023

Boston-based Nine Ice Kills was tasked with the unenviable position of opening the first of two Metallica shows at the Stade de France, in the suburbs of Paris.

The Dead Daisies has always been a revolving door project, with members entering, exiting and returning depending on their schedule. Glenn Hughes, who has been fronting the band since 2019, has booked a solo tour performing Deep Purple classics for the anniversary of the Burn album.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band - La Défense Arena, Nanterre - May 15th, 2023

In the realm of rock concerts, Bruce Springsteen is in a category of his very own. His shows are more than just a music pageant. They are something like a communion, a transcendant experience that goes beyond the music or the performances and move you to your very soul, despite the apparent simplicity of his songs. Is it the energy of the E Street Band, the world's hardest working rock n' roll band? Is it the fans' fervor, singing every song, grooving to every beat, tripping to every solo? Is it the ringleader's earnest charisma? Is it his voice? It's all that and more. There is something undefinable, something you can't put into words, something you have to experience.

Crowbar @ La Bellevilloise, Paris - November 14th, 2023

Less than three weeks after their fellow NOLA-Metal legends Exhorder opened for Overkill at the Trabendo and less than a week after their friends in Corrosion Of Conformity played a career-spanning set at Petit Bain, Sludge Metal legends is also gracing the French capital with their skull-crushing riffs and heavy tempos.

Black Bomb A @ La Bellevilloise, Paris - May 14th, 2023

Black Bomb A is a hardcore/metal crossover legend here in France. In the nearly thirty years these guys have been around, they've released seven studio records, played every stage in the country, and earned a reputation as the scene's most crushing live band. Yet, for some reason, I had never experienced them live until last night.
