Southern rockers Larkin Poe played a killer set last night at the venerable Olympia in Paris. Following The Sheepdogs is no easy task, but band was playing in front of a devoted audience that was immediately entranced with its modern yet reverent take on American idioms like Blues, Country, Country and Rock n' Roll.
Opening with four tunes off of their new album Blood Harmony, the Lovell sisters, accompanied only by a drummer and a bassist, delivered a blistering performance full of energy and emotion. Amidst the captivating tunes, gnarly riffs, tasty solos, gorgeous vocals and a groovy rhythm section, picking a standout moment is challenging, but their acoustic Bluegrass rendition of Elton John's Crocodile Rock is a contender, as is the scorching Heavy Blues of She's A Self Made Man.
We may still perceive Larkin Poe as a young band, but they've been consistently releasing records for nearly a decade. Perhaps this longevity accounts for the band's remarkable tightness, all the while maintaining a strong emphasis on the groove. The groove is fundamental here; this is, after all, a rock n' roll party. Amidst all the laudable descriptors one could attribute to them (soulful, charismatic, you name it), this is the prominent, most important feature of their live show: they rock hard.
