Dark Funeral @ Élysée-Montmartre, Paris - March 22nd, 2023

While their tour mates Cannibal Corpse's sick imagery is supposed to be fun and tongue in cheek, Dark Funeral's presentation is a lot more intimidating. But then Scandinavian Black Metal has traditionally always been a more serious affair. Too serious, sometimes. When the bands in that scene's extra-curricular activities include arson, murder or suicide, it might be time to lighten the fuck up just a little, you know?

On the purely musical front, Dark Funeral slays, no doubt about it. It's dark, it's heavy and it's really fucking intense. As theirs was an opening slot, they only played about nine songs, which clock in at a little under an hour. The bulk of the set was culled from the last two records Where The Shadows Forever Reign and last year's We Are The Apocalypse, and they only played one song from their classic debut The Secrets Of The Black Arts.

An absolutely ferocious show by the one of the best bands of the second wave of Black Metal.
