Check out the trailer for Martin Scorsese's documentary on David Johansen

David Johansen is perhaps most famous for having fronted the New York Dolls from their 1971 inception to their inevitable disintegration in 1976, and then their eventual reformation from 2004 to 2011. He's also had a pretty successful solo run (his live album from 1982 Live It Up is a personal favorite) as well as an unlikely career as lounge singer Buster Poindexter. Add to that a few acting gigs (including a wild turn in Scrooged) and a few blues records with the Harry Smiths, and you have one of the most fascinating characters in Rock n' Roll, one that has come to represent New York's art scene in the same manner as Lou Reed.

So it's no surprise that a music aficionado like Martin Scorsese, who is no stranger to rockumentaries (The Last Waltz, The Blues, No Direction Home...) would chose to produce and co-direct a documentary film about Johansen, with whom he's collaborated before. The film will premiere on Showtime on April 14, and the trailer was just released today. Check it out below:
