Modern Southern Rock heroes Blackberry Smoke played a fantastic set in Paris, despite adverse circumstances: their drummer Brit Turner, who is suffering from brain cancer, was hospitalized after feeling unwell during their previous gig. But thankfully they came prepared and they were able to play the gig thanks to his replacement Kent Aberle.
Simply put, this was an absolutely wonderful show. If you don't know Blackberry Smoke, try to picture The Black Crowes playing Little Feat. Yeah. It's that good. It has everything you might want and expect from this kind of band. Three-guitar attack? Check. Funky rhythm section? Check. Sing-along choruses? Check. Sweet instrumental stoner jams? Check.
Blackberry Smoke has been active for over twenty years. It's hard to believe, until you hear all of their classic songs in their repertoire played back to back in a concert hall, next to some of their newer songs from You Hear Georgia and some deeper cuts. A few years ago, these guys were the future of classic rock. Today, they are classic rock.
