Fresh from a Grammy win for his new album Skyline, recorded with Jack DeJohnette and Ron Carter, as well as a latin Grammy for Live In Marciac, recorded with Aymée Nuviola, famed Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba was in Paris for a piano festival date at the prestigious Salle Pleyel.
On this date, however, he played solo and that format gave his the freedom to explore, stretch out and add little nuances to the themes and rhythms of his compositions. For an hour he regaled the audience with music that was at once pensive and playful, virtuosic and essential.
