Lettuce @ Alhambra, Paris - September 23rd, 2022

Beantown funkateers Lettuce played an excellent gig at the Alhambra in Paris. Relentlessly groovy, impossibly funky, the sextet displayed breathtaking virtuosity without ever veering into tasteless ostentation.

The Bostonians played two sets during which the crowd never stopped dancing. Anchored by the propulsive drum work of Adam Deitch and the bouncy bass lines of Erick Coomes, Lettuce's take on the Funk includes influences from hip-hop, disco, latin, jazz and even psychedelic rock. In fact, guitarist Adam Smirnoff's solos all featured an otherworldly quality, in contrast to the more grounded tones of the horn section comprised of Ryan Zoidis on saxophone and Eric Bloom on trumpet. Keyboardist Nigel Hall completes the line-up and his Hammond organ is the binding agent of this colorful, funky stew.

On top of the terrific music and masterful execution, Lettuce imbued their performance with humor and a palpable sense of fun, without which you couldn't spell FUNK.
