Friday's Playlists: Inspired by Dylan & Dylanesque

In honour of Mr. Zimmerman's 78th birthday you get not one but two playlists this Friday. For the first one, we have compiled a few tunes from artists who have acknowledged their debt to the enigmatic Nobel Prize laureate, some of which even explicitly reference him in the song.

The shadow he casts is so wide and far-ranging that we could have easily made a five-day long playlist: everyone is influenced by Dylan, whether they care to admit it or not, whether they even realise it or not. So we have limited ourselves to obvious examples and to his most famous successors.

For the second playlist we have compiled a huge (and I mean huge) selection of covers by some great artists. There are some redundancies here because EVERYONE has covered Knockin' On Heaven's Door for example. Also, the Byrds and the Band are heavily featured as you can imagine, since they have made a career of covering Dylan.

We have avoided using songs from the numerous tribute albums or the 30th Anniversary concert, but even then the playlist is over six hours long. So pour yourselves a glass of Heaven's Door Whisky and do yourselves a favour and pick up some of the birthday boy's music HERE.
