Friday's Playlist: Founding Fathers & Pioneers

Today marks the 65th anniversary of the recording of Rock Around The Clock by Bill Haley & the Comets. The song is a cover, but it's this recording that is credited for making rock and roll popular across the globe.

Of course, there isn't one artist that is responsible for creating rock and roll. Scholars of binary rhythms are still debating whether the title of first-ever rock and roll song should be attributed to Elvis' version of That's All Right Mama, Chuck Berry's Maybellene, or Ike Turner's production of Jackie Brenston's Rocket 88. Some even point to Sister Rosetta Tharpe's 1945 single Strange Things Are Happening very Day, and while it may sound a little prehistoric there is definitely some credence to that claim.

Regardless of which school you adhere to, the fact is that this original mix of blues grit and country swing would soon wash over the entire world and change the culture forever. This short playlist pays tribute to the founding fathers and pioneers of the original invasion. All of these songs are classics in their own right. You might think they're overplayed, old-fashioned, naive, primitive even... You'd be wrong. They're essential, in every sense of the word.
