Album Review: Lee Fields & the Expressions - It Rains Love

You should know by now that Big Crown Records can do no wrong: all of their releases are consistently excellent. And of course, it shouldn't come as a surprise that a Lee Fields record would be fantastic: ever since his late-career resurgence, he has never failed to put out quality old-school soul music albums and this one is no exception.

Everything about It Rains Love feels real and authentic, from Lee Fields' emotive voice to the Expressions' elegant arrangements. The songwriting is outstanding and quite diverse: there are your traditional torch songs like Love Prisoner, protest tunes like Wake Up, Gospel  and funky numbers like Blessed With The Best, all executed flawlessly by the band and sung with fire and passion by Lee Fields.

How can an artist be making the best music he's ever made 50 years into his career? How can he conjure up the sounds and vibes of a long-gone era without sounding outdated? How can he convey so much emotion with his voice? Thankfully, Lee Fields has the answer to all of our questions: it's right there, at the end of the record.
