Opeth @ Le Trianon, Paris - November 22nd, 2016

A very good set by one of the most adventurous metal bands of the past twenty years. Opeth started out playing rather complex but prototypical black metal, and they have now become a classic progressive band with accents of extreme metal.

Their new record (which is well represented in tonight's setlist) has the warmth and spirit of a vintage seventies stoner rock record and Opeth is now a classic band in the truest sense. When all of their other contemporaries are out their posing in corpse paint, trying to out-evil each other on the pageant circuit, Mikael Åkerfeldt and cie are building a legacy, concentrating on what matters: the music.

Their songs are kaleidoscope of light and shade where beauty and ferocity collide, creating tension, release, and sometimes outright confusion.

A fantastic evening of challenging but ultimately rewarding music.
